“Today we gave them keys to a fully furnished 4 bedroom house which has a separate dining room, lounge, kitchen, tiles, ceiling, electricity and water. We have further committed to help some of the family members to get work so they can support the family.”

Demographic data indicates a significant increase in South Africa's elderly population (aged 60 and older) from 1.1% to 3.0% between 2002–2003 and 2019–2020. This group requires support, including social assistance, cash transfers, food programs, and healthcare access, particularly important given the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.ost-effective carbon capture technology to industrial emitters at gigatonne scale.

About The "One Brick at a Time" initiative."
Since the onset of the COVID-19 crisis, supporting our local communities has become imperative amid these trying circumstances. With most individuals asked to stay at home, the Collen Mashawana Foundation has been actively assisting the elderly, child-headed households, and individuals living with disabilities wherever feasible. Our team has worked diligently nationwide to safely connect with and aid those most affected by the pandemic. We firmly believe that fostering community and caring for the most vulnerable are fundamental aspects of daily life. Access to shelter not only contributes to health benefits but also fosters a sense of purpose and fulfills the basic human need for safety. Through our housing appeal initiatives, we have provided hundreds of individuals with secure shelter, in addition to donating essentials and food parcels as needed.
These individuals have not only received assistance through these programs but have also become part of our extended family, with whom we continue to maintain regular contact to ensure their well-being and provide further assistance when feasible. Our team revisits families who have received aid to verify the condition of the houses built and to ensure their continued welfare. As a Foundation, we believe that aiding those in need should not be a one-time effort but rather an ongoing commitment where all our resources are dedicated to sustaining the well-being of our beneficiaries.
Program Objectives
Despite decades of government-subsidized housing delivery, South Africa still grapples with significant challenges in providing adequate and affordable housing for a large portion of its low-income population. Approximately 20% of urban households live in informal settlements, contributing to a housing shortage of around 3.7 million units. This shortage is estimated to be increasing by 178,000 units annually, highlighting the persistent and complex nature of the issue.
  • To create collaborative efforts between individuals, private organisations, public benefit organisations and government departments in realising adequate housing for the elderly, disabled and child-headed homes.
  • To implement a comprehensive and inclusive national housing program that engages the general public, going beyond the provision of government-subsidized rental housing for lower-income groups or bond subsidies for middle-income groups.
  • To provide dignified living conditions by ensuring access to adequate shelter with running tap water, proper sanitation facilities, and electricity for all individuals.
